Joe Cogdell is a business lawyer with a broad range of experience in corporate, securities, real estate, international and tax. Joe brings a unique perspective to helping clients with their business matters having previously served as General Counsel and executive officer to both publicly traded and privately held international companies in addition to having been a partner with a large multi-state law firm. Joe’s deep business experience and insight enable him to provide clients with practical business-oriented solutions to complex matters and successful closings of critical transactions.
Over his almost four decades of legal practice, Joe has represented public and private companies and individuals in a wide range of business sectors including technology, manufacturing, real estate, energy, financial services, venture capital, construction, retail, distribution, and healthcare.
Joe’s number one desire as a business lawyer is to help his clients timely and cost-effectively achieve their business goals. Some of the successes Joe has helped his clients achieve include: over $5 billion M&A transactions closed; start-up, operation, and sale of pioneer technology company in China; restructuring and divestiture of $5 billion revenue multi-services international company; and multi-state real estate acquisition program for a public company (over 50 sites).
Community service is important to Joe, and his positions in service to the Charlotte community have included Chairman of Mecklenburg County Park & Recreation Commission, Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster Boy Scouts of America for16 years, President and board member Partners for Parks, board member Association of Corporate Counsel Charlotte Chapter and board member Greenways for Mecklenburg.
Joe has been recognized as a Super Lawyer in North Carolina and an AV Preeminent Attorney by Martindale Hubbell and was recognized by the Association of Corporate Counsel Charlotte Chapter in 2017 with its Civic Leadership Award.
Throughout his career Joe has authored numerous legal publications and articles covering corporate and tax topics including Bloomberg BNA’s Tax Management Portfolio 620, Practice Before the IRS; Attorney’s Fees in Tax Proceedings (1997; revised 2008).
